Posture for Success
Before you lead others, you have to examine where you stand.
Before you stand, you need to learn how to walk.
And before you walk—you must know how to sit.
In Sit, Walk, Stand: The Process of Christian Maturity, Watchman Nee outlines three spiritual postures drawn from Ephesians.
Sit — our position in Christ. We don’t start by striving—we start by resting in what God has already done.
Walk — our life in the world. Where we go, who we walk with, and what we pursue shapes our direction.
Stand — our response to the enemy. What we tolerate, resist, or compromise defines our strength.
“To be useful in God‘s hand, a man must be properly adjusted with respect to all three: his position, his life and his warfare.” - Watchman Nee
Psalm 1 reveals what happens when these postures align with God:
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:6 NIV
The streams that nourish us often flow through the Word of God and the people He places around us. In seasons when we feel dry, it is the rooted life, grounded in God and community, that keeps us from withering.
“Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.” Psalm 1:4-5 NIV
What appears strong for a moment can prove weightless in eternity.
Without roots, there is no resilience. Without substance, nothing remains.
“For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.” Psalms 1:6 NIV
When our posture is aligned and we sit in Christ, walk in His ways, and stand in His truth—we become lives that bear fruit, endure harsh seasons, and reflect His glory.
Then the door is open for Him to move and use us. Hearts and minds change, and He gets all the glory He is due.
God is not just watching your path, He is shaping it. Your posture determines the fruit.
Reflect
1 Which posture: Sit, Walk, or Stand, have you neglected or resisted? What is holding you back?
2 Who are the people and influences shaping your walk right now? Is there anything or anyone you need to let go of?
3 Remembrance: Think back to a time when life felt chaotic and unstable. How did God anchor you and show His presence as you sought to walk in His ways?
Prayer
Lord,
Align my posture with You. Teach me to sit in Your truth, walk in Your ways, and stand firm against anything that pulls me away from You. Root me deeply in Your Word and surround me with people who strengthen my faith. In every season, keep me planted. Amen.
